Overview
The IAAF World Championships London 2017 brought together world-class athletes and an international audience, demanding exceptional infrastructure to support operations and spectator movement. Worldwide Event Structures was tasked with delivering multiple access solutions in and around the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, ensuring seamless movement while preserving the integrity of these historic landmarks.
Our Role
We provided bespoke Layher system scaffolding solutions, including staircases, ramps, and cable management structures, all designed for safe access and operational efficiency.

Key Installations
-
VIP & Public Staircases: Two Layher system staircases, one for VIPs and another for public access, were installed to connect road level to the moat area. These structures were built with slip-resistant phenolic plywood for safe footing, and contrasting stair nosings for visibility.
-
Public Access Ramp: A 105m-long scaffold ramp, 1.5m wide, was installed to ensure smooth public access from concourse level to the moat. Designed with slip-resistant phenolic plywood decking, the structure provided a safe and stable route for large crowds.
-
Cable Bridge & Towers: To facilitate cable management for TV broadcasts and event infrastructure, we installed a cable bridge with additional support towers. These structures were amended on-site to ensure optimal positioning for riggers and technical teams.
-
Additional Cable Towers: Two extra cable towers were constructed to span cables from the bridge to the final installation points. Each tower was designed with stability and ballast to withstand the necessary load requirements.
-
Installation Support: We provided Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) and mobile aluminium towers to assist with the installation and dismantling of cable solutions on Tower Bridge.
Challenges & Solutions
-
Preserving a Historic Site: Working at the Tower of London required careful planning to avoid damage to the historic structure. We implemented non-invasive securing methods and ensured all installations adhered to heritage site guidelines.
-
Ensuring Safe Public Access: Given the high footfall, all access solutions incorporated slip-resistant surfaces and visibility-enhancing features, ensuring maximum safety for visitors.
-
Complex Cable Management: The evolving needs of the TV production team required on-site modifications, including extending the cable bridge and repositioning support towers. Our adaptable approach ensured a smooth installation process without disruption to the event.
