Overview
As part of the London Design Festival, Please Feed the Lions by ES Devlin transformed Trafalgar Square with an interactive installation that engaged audiences in a unique blend of technology and art. Worldwide Event Structures played a crucial role in the project by constructing three projection towers to house the projectors, enabling the striking visual effects that brought the artwork to life.

Our Role
We were tasked with delivering three projection towers—two positioned on either side of the sculpture and one directly opposite—to facilitate the projection mapping. These towers had to be built overnight under challenging conditions to meet the tight project deadline.
Key Installations
- Projection Towers: Three towers were constructed to support high-powered projectors, ensuring the seamless display of dynamic visuals onto the bright red lion sculpture.
- Precision & Structural Stability: The towers had to be positioned for perfect projection alignment while ensuring safety and stability amid the unpredictable outdoor conditions of Trafalgar Square.
- Overnight Installation: Given the nature of the site, materials were delivered late in the evening, and the towers had to be erected in a tight timeframe to be ready for the scheduled unveiling the next morning.
Challenges & Solutions
- Tight Timeframe: With only a few hours to work before the city awoke, our team worked efficiently to build the structures overnight, ensuring the project stayed on schedule.
- Weather Conditions: High winds and poor visibility presented challenges during installation, but careful planning and structural reinforcement ensured the towers were stable and safe.
- Public Space Logistics: Working in Trafalgar Square, a major public landmark, required meticulous coordination to ensure minimal disruption while complying with all safety regulations.
Results
The projection towers successfully supported the visual storytelling of Please Feed the Lions, allowing visitors to see their words projected onto the lion’s face and onto Nelson’s Column at night. Our ability to deliver under pressure reinforced our expertise in creating temporary structures for high-profile public art installations.
