Introduction
In a high-profile installation along the iconic River Thames, we were tasked with building a robust and visually striking structure for Huawei’s 4.6-metre Rubik’s Cube. The interactive cube served as a promotional centerpiece for the Mate 20 Pro smartphone, showcasing the phone’s AI-powered capabilities in a fun, hands-on demonstration. Notable figures such as Made in Chelsea’s Georgia Toffolo took part in solving the puzzle, further boosting the attraction’s profile.
Project Overview
Huawei envisioned a life-sized Rubik’s Cube that would be brought to life with LED panels and cutting-edge technology. Our role centered on creating the underlying Layher scaffold framework and a custom-fabricated cover to house these panels and ensure the entire installation was stable, safe, and aligned with the overall aesthetic goals. The structure had to endure various environmental factors typical of an outdoor London setting, from strong winds to potential rain, while preserving clear sightlines for visitor engagement and photo opportunities.
Engineering and Design
- Layher Scaffold Framework: We selected Layher scaffolding for its proven reliability, flexibility, and quick assembly. This allowed us to create a fully customizable base that could be adapted to support the weight of the interactive cube and its integrated LED panels.
- Custom-Fabricated Cover: To bring Huawei’s concept to life, we designed a cover that not only fit perfectly around the framework but also complemented the cube’s vibrant, tech-forward feel. This cover provided a polished finish and served as a seamless backdrop for high-resolution lighting effects.
On-Site Execution
Working on London’s South Bank required close coordination with local authorities and event management teams. Despite the high foot traffic and safety regulations in place, our crew carried out an efficient assembly and testing process, ensuring minimal disruption to passersby. Once the sub-structure was complete and tested for stability, the LED panels were installed, and the AI-enabled interactions were integrated to create an immersive visitor experience.
Project Impact
The giant Rubik’s Cube quickly became a must-see attraction, with visitors of all ages stopping to admire and interact with the installation. The Mate 20 Pro’s AI capabilities—demonstrated by guiding participants through solving the cube—reinforced Huawei’s innovative brand image. By delivering a sturdy, innovative scaffold structure, we helped foster a memorable visual spectacle against one of London’s most recognisable backdrops.
Conclusion
This project showcased our expertise in crafting innovative event and media structures that merge design, engineering, and seamless execution. From concept to completion, the installation exemplified how attention to both function and form can capture public interest and elevate a brand’s message.
